This new house in the west of Ireland was built for a client who wished to create a comfortable home on an existing family farm. Our client wanted to take advantage of a superb site and to make a home that would reference the traditional architecture of the old house and the Irish classical tradition. The house is, at the same time, a modern and convenient dwelling with heat recovery and air to water heating systems. We worked with an excellent local contractor whose skills as a joiner are manifest at every turn. Every detail was considered and realised so that views, light, and colour are exploited but in a way that also recognises the need for a cosy refuge in the cooler darker months. We also worked with the clients to select colours, finishes and fittings and with their own favourite pieces to achieve a balance between heritage and function. A little bit of west of Ireland ‘hygge’ perhaps.

This house, a Protected Structure, located on Ely Place just off Stephen’s Green in Dublin 2 forms part of a late 18th century (1770) terrace which was modified externally in the Edwardian era. Three storey over basement with two rooms per floor, it had been in office use for many years however the layout and many original features were still extant including internal joinery and a distinctive staircase.

The brief was to return this to a residence and create a relaxed city centre base for a regular overseas visitor to Dublin, with accommodation for guests and space to house an eclectic Art collection.

The accommodation was reconfigured to provide a Kitchen, Utility and Guest WC at basement level, Front Parlour and Living room on the ground floor opening onto small terrace, Drawing Room interconnecting with a Study at first floor, Principal Bedroom, Dressing Room and Bathroom above and two Guest Bedrooms with Bathrooms under the roof .

The fabric of the building both inside and out was painstakingly restored along with the installation of new mechanical and electrical services. The interior design including detailed cabinet work, selection of finishes, paint schemes and fabrics was also carried out by S& B

This project presented an opportunity to transform four separate modern apartments into a luxurious holiday retreat. Located in a contemporary development surrounded by serene grounds, the task at hand was to combine three of the apartments into one while leaving the fourth as a separate guest residence.

To connect the two levels of the apartments and add a touch of glamour, we broke through the cast concrete floor and created a new double height staircase hall. This inviting space was lined with warm oak panels and featured a modern staircase with stainless steel handrails and balusters. The combination of materials added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the interior. By establishing this stunning staircase hall, we added a visual centrepiece that drew attention and created a sense of wonder within the space.

Our careful interiors scheme also contributes to the resulting luxurious yet cozy holiday retreat, inviting guests to relax and immerse themselves in the beauty of their surroundings.

Located in one of South Dublin’s suburbs, our objective was to create sophisticated and contemporary interiors for this modern home. Particular attention was given to the layout design, carefully considering how each space would open up towards the gardens to maximize the connection between the indoors and outdoors. The finest materials were selected, including moon-cream stone flooring sourced from Turkey and oak parquet flooring imported from the United States. These high-quality materials contribute to the overall luxurious atmosphere of the homes.

This project involved a complete refurbishment of a protected structure that had previously been divided into separate units. Our goal was to restore the building into a comfortable family home. To achieve this, the first step was to remove any later additions or subdivisions that had been made to the property over the years. We focused our efforts on the restoration and refurbishment of the original fabric of the building.

Great care and attention were given to reinstating the period features of the house, such as cornices, ceiling roses, and windows. We meticulously restored these elements to their former glory, ensuring that the historical integrity of the property was maintained.

In addition to the restoration work, we added a new sunroom to the side of the house in a contemporary style. The sunroom featured a striking copper roof and slender timber joinery, using a modern “Metolike” system. This new addition provided a bright and inviting space that seamlessly integrated with the existing structure. Overall, the project successfully achieved our objective of transforming the protected structure into a comfortable and functional family home.
