Originally built as a ‘racing lodge’ with minimal accommodation, this house was designed for entertaining while attending a days racing. Gradually it became a full time residence and rooms were added sporadically and without a coherent plan. Our project sought to refurbish the house, while rationalising the plan so that it worked as a modern dwelling with traditional roots.

A new garden pavilion was also added in a sympathetic style. We designed the fitted joinery and worked with the client on every aspect of the finishes. The house is now a family home while keeping and accentuating its character and retaining its charm. Roof, windows and the delicate timber veranda to the front were all carefully restored. The interior plan was opened up to allow rooms to flow and connect. The house is now ‘off to the races’ once again.

This new house in the west of Ireland was built for a client who wished to create a comfortable home on an existing family farm. Our client wanted to take advantage of a superb site and to make a home that would reference the traditional architecture of the old house and the Irish classical tradition. The house is, at the same time, a modern and convenient dwelling with heat recovery and air to water heating systems. We worked with an excellent local contractor whose skills as a joiner are manifest at every turn. Every detail was considered and realised so that views, light, and colour are exploited but in a way that also recognises the need for a cosy refuge in the cooler darker months. We also worked with the clients to select colours, finishes and fittings and with their own favourite pieces to achieve a balance between heritage and function. A little bit of west of Ireland ‘hygge’ perhaps.

The client was very keen to ensure that the house perform to a high level with renewables, insulation, windows and building fabric to the highest specification.

The dwelling is energy efficient, with air to water heating systems, underfloor heating, mechanical heat recovery ventilation and an extensive solar array with battery storage.

The form of the house is contemporary, with a “back to front” approach – therefore arrival is to the rear of the site with a covered car port entrance while the front addresses the sun and views to the Dublin mountains to the southwest. A sun filled double height atrium space visually connects these two aspects.

The rooms are furnished with custom designed joinery including a bespoke steel and timber staircase to the entrance hall.

We were challenged by long standing clients to rescue a pair of dilapidated farm buildings adjoining their 18th century house in rural Wicklow and to convert them into to accommodation for guests and visiting family. The stone built structures, typical of the period, comprised a two storey range with animal housing at ground level and loft above and a single storey carriage house, forming two sides of a sloping yard.

The project involved the stabilisation and refurbishment of both structures, to provide four bedrooms with bathrooms above a large hall, drawing room and kitchen designed for entertaining. We adopted a light touch approach to minimise interference with the original structures. Existing opes were utilised for new doors and windows and the plan was dictated by the surviving internal walls. Natural materials were used throughout including new and salvaged slates, stone and timber flooring, lime renders and bespoke joinery. The characterful result is light filled, contemporary and clean.

We redesigned the farmyard to include a large raised terrace overlooking a box parterre bordered by pollarded chestnuts, while the haggard to the north was planted as a natural woodland.

This project involved a complete refurbishment of a protected structure that had previously been divided into separate units. Our goal was to restore the building into a comfortable family home. To achieve this, the first step was to remove any later additions or subdivisions that had been made to the property over the years. We focused our efforts on the restoration and refurbishment of the original fabric of the building.

Great care and attention were given to reinstating the period features of the house, such as cornices, ceiling roses, and windows. We meticulously restored these elements to their former glory, ensuring that the historical integrity of the property was maintained.

In addition to the restoration work, we added a new sunroom to the side of the house in a contemporary style. The sunroom featured a striking copper roof and slender timber joinery, using a modern “Metolike” system. This new addition provided a bright and inviting space that seamlessly integrated with the existing structure. Overall, the project successfully achieved our objective of transforming the protected structure into a comfortable and functional family home.

This townhouse, which is a Protected Structure, needed a modern touch while preserving its unique charm. Our goal was to create a warm and inviting space for the client, with a new kitchen extension at the garden level and an art gallery in the basement.

The new kitchen extension was designed to seamlessly blend with the existing structure, creating a bright and modern space. We carefully chose high-quality materials to ensure a harmonious transition between the old and new parts of the building.
The transformation of the basement into an art gallery paid close attention to lighting, display areas, and climate control to provide the perfect setting for showcasing artwork. Each detail was carefully considered to create a space that is both visually stunning and practical for exhibiting works of art.

Particular attention was given to the layout design, carefully considering how each space would open up towards the gardens to maximize the connection between the indoors and outdoors. These high-quality materials contribute to the overall luxurious atmosphere of the homes.

The project involved the renovation and expansion of an 1870 historic house in Dublin 6. The existing extensions to the side and rear of the house were not in line with the original character of the building, so we designed new extension that was sympathetic to the existing terrace. We matched and recreated elements such as brackets and stepped string courses, ensuring that the new extension seamlessly blends with the historic character of the original structure.

To ensure that the renovated house is not only visually appealing but also sustainable, various eco-friendly features were incorporated. Rainwater harvesting systems, solar water heating, and a geothermal heat pump were implemented to minimize the environmental impact of the residence.
